Enterprise GIS
The HRIC is the custodian of a vast quantity of geographical data of the Herbert area which is used by the sugar industry, local and state government, natural resource management and research organisations.
An Enterprise GIS provides one standardised system that makes geographic information available to a wide number of organisations and individuals. A user can easily view, create, modify and analyse this information via the internet.
An Enterprise approach to GIS consolidate "silos" of information, standardises existing technologies, minimises the duplication of information services, increases productivity and provides immediate cost savings.
Maps can be viewed on the internet without having to buy or use specialised GIS software. For example, a cane farmer can use Internet Explorer to look at a map of their cane blocks along with the associated data, such as soil type and fertiliser input.
HRIC’s Enterprise GIS now provides a “single point of truth” to improve the business efficiency of its Joint Venture Partners.
HRIC has used its Enterprise GIS to develop the Herbert Information Portal. This is the gateway to the Herbert Geospatial Data Library, which holds hundreds of geographical data files for which HRIC is the custodian.
The sugar industry can now track harvesting in real time and better manage harvesting and yield analysis. Cane farmers and harvesters are provided with password protected access to the Enterprise GIS.
