Hinchinbrook Shire Council is the local government authority representing the Lower Herbert River area.

The Council provides the many and varied local government services to Hinchinbrook Shire’s residents. Engineering services include construction and maintenance (e.g. local roads) and water and sewerage. Environmental Health services include waste management, community health and public amenities.

The Council’s corporate strategy is to encourage economic and employment development, particularly in the sugar industry and tourism.
