The Herbert Atlas
The HRIC has created a potentially life-saving atlas of the Herbert region to make it easier for emergency services crews to find accident scenes in rural areas.
Emergency services and CSR Sugar asked HRIC to develop the Atlas after several incidents in the 2008 crushing season in which rescue crews had trouble locating the incident site due to a lack of suitable maps.
The Atlas comprises 53 maps at 1:50 000 scale as well as larger scale maps of towns. Roads, towns, homesteads, major rivers, cane railways, bridges and other features can quickly be referenced using an ABC-123 grid system. There is also a Lat/Long grid, so coordinates from a GPS receiver can be used.
In 2008, HRIC won the Sugar Research & Development Corporation’s Innovation Award. The $15,000 prize money is being used to finance the production of the map atlas, for the benefit of all of the Hinchinbrook community.
The Herbert Atlas is currently only available for the emergency services and CSR field staff. Options to make it available to the general public are being investigated.
